Sunshine Blogger Award

I would like to thank Ben Aqiba for the Nomination. Ben is a great writer whose posts make you think about your life through new light. That is his whole goal; he is a messenger. From his writings I have found a better understanding of my life, and the world around me. Please check out http://benaqiba.com and take a journey with him.

What’s your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from my love of food. I am trying to draw out memories I have stored away through my food. When started to share my food with family and friends, that it would remind them of a memory they had. This not only brought joy to me, but it brought joy to them. That is what inspires me, the chance to bring joy, and remembrance to people’s lives.
What is the best thing you’ve done this year?

The best thing I’ve done this year is take some time to rediscover myself. 2016 was a bad year for my mental state. I felt like everyone was out to get me, and lived in fear of failure. This costed me a few work relationships, and damaged some with friends and family. Being able to correct that mindset has helped me to become calmer. Also, I feel like it’s helped me become a better father, and a better husband.

If you were to change one thing in your life, what would it be?

I love my life; I love my wife, kids, parents, sibling, and in-laws. The struggles that I have faced have only made me stronger. It’s given me a better understanding of the world. The one thing I would change if I could is my outlook on school. I was not the best student, and did not apply myself to the best of my abilities. I had a problem showing up, and didn’t hone in on learning until my last year of high school. I graduated, and went on to get a BA in Business. I would be better off if I applied myself through those four years instead of one though.
What is your safe haven?

Being a foodie who loves cooking my safe haven should be my kitchen right? Wrong, I actually have two safe havens. First one being racing, I grew up spending my weekends at dirt tracks, and drag strips. Whenever I need a break I head to the race track to clear my head and remember simpler times. The second is concerts, Rachael and I first connected over a love for music. We use to go concerts almost weekly when Omaha was more of music hot spot. With both our kids, we went to concerts while they were still brewing. Any chance Rachael and I get try to go find a concert that will take us back to that time in our lives.
What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal would have to be homemade chicken and dumplings. Growing up it was a fall staple the most anticipated day of the week. Nothing reminds of home like a big old pot of chicken and dumplings. We use to put it in the center of the table surround it as a family. We would pass around stories of our day and laughter at our bad jokes.
When are you most productive?
This is a hard one to explain. I am most productive at work. That is due to wanting to do the best I can, and being the manager I try to set the example. Other than work, I am most productive with household chores midday, when the kids are at school, or napping. I am most productive at writing when we are watching the bedtime movie. I find that these are the best times for me actually do things outside of referee kids, or pick up the carnage.
What do you do in your spare time?
Oh boy, where to start. I don’t have spare time anymore. I usually get about 5 hours a week that is “spare time” to which I spend trying to get up caught up on shows that are on the DVR. Between working full time and part time, starting this flog, and parenting I don’t have a lot of time left. I would love to get to the point that I can work less, and spend more time with my family and writing. I grew up with hard working parents, and I am one who shares that trait.
What was the most challenging moment in your blogging journey so far?
The most challenging moment in my blogging journey so far has to be starting it. I was concerned about starting the blog. I am the type of person who stands on the edge of the cliff peering off it always wondering if I should take that jump. I took a leap a while ago and the parachute failed, and I landed hard. Blogging to me at first was uncomfortable, I am a private person who likes to keep to himself, sharing is scary! I am becoming more comfortable with sharing. I have started to focus more on my stories to fill those around me with food, joy, and wonder.
What super power would you want if you could have one?
What super power would I want? I would want the power to heal. I don’t need to see through things, I hate running, I don’t want to see the future, only to heal. We are all faced with demons, and we are all injured in some way. I would love to be able to cure those who have fight for everyday for the next. Granted, it’s a two way street. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and the life experiences make us who are. So I would hate to remove those from people’s lives.
Would you encourage other people to make their blog and why?
I would encourage others to make their blog. Why should someone who has a message that they want to share with the world be silenced? We are all given live on this earth for a reason. I would rather give someone a chance in the spotlight than let them hide in the shadows. I love finding new blogs that focus on their quality, not the quantity they share. Since the blogging world is already filled with bloggers copying other bloggers. They come off as trying to get views, and traffic with the sole intent to make money.
Who is your style icon?

I don’t think I have a style icon to say. I am laid back person, when given the choice I end up wearing whatever I find first? So I guess I follow every guy ever, or a farmer? I like to wear band shirts and shorts, oh and hats. Yes, I am very on point in the style department, clearly. I’ve believed in being true to you is important. Clothes are clothes, what we wear doesn’t define who we are. I’ve seen people with money wear only Walmart clothes, and I’ve seen struggling people wear Gucci. Clothes show a small percentage of who we are.
